In un articolo di Taede A.Smedes, The quest for a new perspective, l’autore riflette sull’iterazione dell’uomo con le macchine, la tecnologia, e sul confine tra individuo e macchina. Un punto cruciale e’ la proposta (del cognitivista Andy Clark) che siamo del natural-born cyborgs, e che quindi il fare uso di tecnologia, l’estendeci con essa sia perfettamente connaturato con l’essere umani. Dice Dmedes: Our relation to technology has become one of symbiosis between humans and machines.
Il passo ulteriore, inevitabile, e’ la visione di quale sia il mondo in cui uomini e macchine vivono in simbiosi:
First of all, the model suggests and presupposes a kind of holistic worldview. Mind, body, and world are closely interwoven and the boundaries between them are fluid. In Clark’s view, seeing mind and body as detached from the rest of the world, is a construct, just as our sense of place, presence, and self are constructs. These constructs are created by our sense of self and person. Perhaps the self and person too are constructs, as in the example of Putnam’s brain-in-a-vat analogy (which was one of the sources of The Matrix) but our sense of them (which is part of our identity) is very real. Moreover, our sense of them is closely linked to our bodily experiences. In other words, this holistic worldview presupposes that our mind is embodied and thus situated.
L’autore, che prosegue con interessanti considerazioni filosofiche e teologiche, non considera una ulteriore conseguenza: la mente, che e’ situata, incarnata in un corpo, ma un corpo esteso alle macchine che usa, e allargato ai possibili contatti ed interazioni, affogato in un ambiente che lo permea, questa mente di conseguenza abita anche le macchine che usa. La mia mente abita il blog che scrivo, e interagisce (starei per dire “in mia assenza”) con il resto.
La corporeita’ non e’ un fatto di confini definiti da superfici (la pelle), ma di estensione e intensita’. Estensione, cioe’ ampiezza della portata delle macchine che la mia mente abita, e intensita’, cioe’ quanto questa azione puo’ essere rapportata a “me”, qualsiasi cosa questa parola sia portata a significare.
Ulteriore, ancora piu’ interessante conseguenza, e che piu’ menti possono coesistere, coabitare in questo corpo diffuso.
